1) Introduction: employer and expected results

The Vocational Education Development Center Malang (VEDC/PPPGT) is an integrated part of the Indonesian Vocational Education System under the Ministry of National Education  (MoNE).

The VEDC Malang offers small series production, training and formal tertiary education in technical subjects for teachers at vocational schools (pre- and inline service), BA engineer education (D4), consulting in vocational education and demand oriented training for job seekers or industry.

The training delivered in 2005 amounts to 11,000-person month training per year.

The institution plays an important role as developer and implementer in vocational education activities to the society, industry and government institutions, national and international.

Since 1998 students from Germany have been coming to the VEDC Malang to absolve an internship, a diploma thesis or a bachelor thesis abroad. They are coming from universities like the Fachhochschule Darmstadt, Fachhochschule Wiesbaden, Technische Universität Darmstadt, Humboldt UniversitätBerlin, Johan WolfgangGoethe Universität Frankfurt, Friedrich Schiller UniversitätJena but also from ElektronikschuleTettnang.

Today more then 48 students have come to the VEDC Malang from all over the world to attend a semester abroad. For this certain time every student gets a project which has to be finished in an agreed period. The VEDC Malang offers several projects in nearly all areas, like engineering, drive engineering, electro technics, mechatronics, information technology, automation technology as well as business administration, management and controlling.

By inviting foreign students the Vocational Education Development Center Malang gains helpful techical innovations and information, and as a result of the projects the VEDC receives necessary teaching aids for the training courses offered by this institution.

Also the students gain important practical experiences, which is necessary for their further working life. Since this year this program is supported by the Government in

Jakarta and the VEDC Malang receives a budget for this extra-ordinary challenge. As a result ofthis great agreement the VEDC Malang accepted 20 applicants this year.

BA-Malang counts 500th student

BA-Malang, the first institution in South-East-Asia offering a simultanious theoretical and practical education, was founded in 2001 with the Berufsakademie Stuttgart in Germany as its model. It has already achieved its first milestone counting more than 500 students this year.

The number of students applying for a place at BA-Malang is increasing rapidly every year so that strong admission requirements must be met by the applicants. Being accepted, students are trained at BA-Malang by professors of the internationally highly regarded Politeknik Elektronika Negeri Surabaya (ITS) as well as from VEDC Malang or BA-Stuttgart. They receive a practical education in one of more than 75 Indonesian and international companies. Three programs are offered: Mechatronics, Automation Technologies and Information Technologies.

After the assistant test in semester 6, the best students are offered the opportunity of completing their studies at BA Stuttgart in Germany as Dipl.-Ing (BA)/Bachelor. Additionally, they will also receive the Indonesian Diploma 4 (SST) like their fellow students.

With a reduction to three months of break every year, studies are finished after 3 years and 4 months and graduates can take on tasks that require a high amount of responsibility for they already have three years of work experience in industry.

BA-Malang with its now more than 500 students is setting new standards of education.

Indonesian students complete their studies at a German university

Every year a selected group of BA-Malang students is offered the opportunity to complete their studies at the German Berufsakademie Stuttgart to receive the German Diploma/Bachelor next to their Indonesian Diploma 4.

Since lectures at BA-Malang are held in Indonesian and English and additional language courses in German are offerd, students will be well prepared for the international field of work. Also the curriculum meets the requirements of industry and academic partners in Germany to provide an easy start into professional life.

With this international and multilingual education, BA-Malang students are worldwide highly requested.

At the joint program BA-Malang, students are offered three programs to specialize in: Mechatronics, Automation Technologies and Information Technologies.

VEDC Malang, the partner for theoretical and practical education at BA-Malang, is especially aware of keeping its technologies and training programs up-to-date for perfectly matching industry’s needs. While the IT department is currently implementing means for Multimedia, Animation and Programming, the Mechatronic department is preparing two of its students for WORLDSKILLS – the world championships in vocational competition held in Helsinki, Finland this year.

With these latest innovations, VEDC Malang ist providing its students with globally required skills.
